In celebration of our 10th Anniversary, Bast Amron has asked each of our lawyers to write about their passion outside the law.
This month Bast Amron highlights Hayley Harrison. Hayley joined the firm in 2013 and is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Hayley’s passion, described in her own words, brings us in to the world of health and wellness, and the use of essential oils.
When I became pregnant two years ago, I quickly realized that there were a number of medications I was regularly putting in my body that weren’t good for me, or the baby. I decided to investigate some more natural alternatives, and stumbled upon a friend from high school who was big into essential oils. As an early childhood teacher, she had a special interest in the uses of essential oils for expecting mothers and babies. I took a deep dive into her world, and was eager to learn as much as I could about the products.
I quickly incorporated some of the basics into my everyday routine, which over the last two years has tremendously expanded. Through the use of certified therapeutic grade essential oils, and learning to make my own blends, I was able to stop taking prescription medications that I had been on for years.
I have crafted blends which help with sleep, anxiety and fighting colds, and regularly use them. As my due date approached, I was curious about how/if I would use these oils during labor and with my new baby. My blends played a major role in emotionally supporting me through the process, and when my little girl was born, we immediately developed a regular habit and incorporated properly diluted oils into her every day routine. Now, at 19 months old, she asks for her rollerballs, and knows where to apply specific oils. Since she is in daycare fulltime, we use an immunity blend every day, along with a host of other oils to support her. We have a blend that has helped fight ear infections, one for teething, and several to help combat some of the strong toddler emotions that we sometimes face.
Essential oils may not be for everyone, but for me they have been a replacement for most medications. I would never have considered myself someone who would be interested in “alternative” remedies, as I liked popping ibuprofen as quickly as a headache came on, but these oils have truly changed the way I think about and use medications, and have had a tremendously positive impact on me and my family. I’ve amassed quite the collection, and would be happy to guide you through the process of finding what might work for you.
